COURSE OUTCOMES/ OBJECTIVES
- Identify and use fundamental grammar principles
- Identify and use fundamental sentence structure principles
- Identify and use fundamental punctuation principles
- Develop proof-reading skills
- Create effective topic sentence.s
- Write complete and varied sentences with few spelling, good punctuation, and few grammar errors.
- Create paragraphs using stages of the writing process.
- Write paragraphs using a variety of organizational patterns.
- Explain the concepts of the thesis statement and the five-paragraph essay.
METHOD OF INSTRUCTION
This course is taught through lecture, group work, pair work. Modes of instructional delivery could include: lecture, small group discussion, guided conversation, demonstration, problem-based inquiry, and collaborative activities. Instruction may be a mix of presentation, facilitation, group projects, and guided activities through on-going communication between instructor and students. One credit is generated by one weekly contact hour of instruction or the equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. Generally, this course requires out-of-class student effort, typically two hours per class hour.
Various activities will be used to ensure comprehension of learning material to reach course objectives such as in-class readings, grammar exercises, in-class quick writes, class discussions, etc.

Grading
Per LWTech’s grading policy, a minimum grade of 2.0 is required to apply the course towards technical requirements, general education requirements, progression in a sequence of classes, to satisfy a prerequisite, and graduation requirements. However, any grade 0.7 to 1.9 demonstrates that you got credit for the course. Any grade below 0.7 is entered as 0.0 in Washington state’s community and technical college grading system.
