1) HOW OFTEN ARE YOU (the instructor) IN THE CANVAS CLASSROOM?

I'm in the classroom everyday, even if I don't post something everyday. Remember, my comments, though directed at one student, are useful for all students, so make sure and read all of my postings and responses to questions in the Student Lounge.

2) WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO CONTACT YOU?

Whenever you have a class/assignment/posting question, you should always post a message in the Question & Answer Discussion. Your classmates might be able to answer the question before I do, and I always correct and amend responses if necessary. If you have a question/concern of a private nature, then please feel free to email me through the Canvas email system or instant message me if you see me online.

3) WHAT IS YOUR PHONE NUMBER?

At present, I do not have an office telephone number. Email and a post in the Question & Answer Discussion are your best means of contact.

4) HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE YOU TO ANSWER EMAIL (Canvas email system)?

It usually takes me between 12-24 hours to respond to email. If you do not have a reply from me within 48 hours, then I did not receive your message, so please email me (using Canvas email system) again or post a message in the Question & Answer Discussion.

STUDENT CONCERNS

1) WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I CAN’T LOGIN TO CANVAS?

The very first thing you should do if you cannot access Canvas is click on the Help link underneath the login box to reset your password or submit a ticket. You can also get live support from: http://www.seattlecentral.edu/distance/ Finally, please try telephone or email: 206.934.4060/dislrn@seattlecolleges.edu

If Canvas is down, then keep trying to log back in (a message on the login screen will advise both of us of all Canvas outages). If Canvas is down on the day an assignment is due, and you have CC’d me on an email to the Canvas helpdesk saying that you cannot login, I will give an extension to the assignment provided the IT department verifies the downtime.

2) HOW DO I CHANGE MY EMAIL ADDRESS?

It’s a course requirement that you add a valid email address to Canvas prior to the start of instruction. To do so, follow these directions:

1) Login to Canvas

2) Click on the Account link in the left hand column

3) Click on Settings and “Add Email Address” in the upper right corner

4) Update address and click "Save"

ASSIGNMENTS & DEADLINES

1) WHERE DO I FIND THE TEXTBOOK INFORMATION?

Required readings are listed in the Course Syllabus and/or the Textbooks and Course Materials page in the Modules. Additional reading materials will be available in modules, as separate PDFs, or via hyperlink to websites.

2) WHERE ARE THE CLASS ASSIGNMENTS?

All assignments are listed on your Calendar and a detailed description can be found in the Modules, which are broken down into weekly units. If you click on the two lines and downward triangular arrow, the modules will open and you will have access to all curriculum, readings, assignments, message boards, etc., for each weekly unit.

3) WHAT IS THE CALENDAR?

The CALENDAR is your one page key to the quarter’s assignments and due dates.

4) WHERE CAN I FIND THE CALENDAR AND SYLLABUS?

You can find the Calendar by clicking on the Calendar link that runs down the left hand side of the page and the Syllabus is in the left navigation bar.

5) WHERE DO I POST ASSIGNMENTS?

For individual assignments, you should always submit your assignments in the specified text box, attache file, or post your responses in the appropriate discussion boards. You will find the discussion board in the individual weekly unit modules.

7) HOW STRICT ARE THE DEADLINES?

The deadlines in this class are strict. You have all assignments and due dates listed on the Calendar, which is available to you on the first day of class. This means that you can record all due dates on your calendar and prepare for personal conflicts in advance. You may also sign up for a variety of notifications in different social media formats so there are plenty of opportunities to remind yourselves of upcoming assignments.

VERY IMPORTANT: Because students often experience computer/ISP malfunctions, you should not wait until the last minute to post assignments. Computer/ISP malfunctions are not excuses for failure to post assignments. A working computer and ISP connection are a course requirement, so in the event of a malfunction, you need get to the library, a friend/family’s home, or even an Internet café to meet the stipulated deadlines.

8) IS THERE ANY EXTRA CREDIT IN THIS CLASS?

No. There is no extra credit in this class.

GRADES & ASSESSMENT

1) HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE THE INSTRUCTOR TO GRADE MY WORK?

I try to assess your work almost as soon as you complete it; however, I teach other classes and periodically attend conferences, so you may not always get immediate feedback. I usually grade assignments within a week after the due date. Bear in mind that we want you to pass this class and commit to being a responsible, knowledgeable professional. If you read the materials and complete the assignments, you should be able to pass the class.

2) WHERE CAN I FIND MY GRADES?

Whenever you wish to see how you are doing in the course, click the Grades link in the course navigation bar on your left. If you feel that I may have inadvertently left out an assignment, or you feel that your grade on an assignment looks too low, make sure to email me and ask about it. I have been known to make mistakes, and it's good to check if you have any questions.

3) HOW DO I CALCULATE MY CLASS AVERAGE?

Canvas should calculate your grade for you - just take a look at the top of the Grades tab and keep in mind that grades in this class are allocated on a percent basis. I take the total number of assignment points and divide this by the number of points you achieve to gain your final grade percentage. In this class, 65% or above is the lowest pass mark.
