What is this class? Course descriptions & objectives
Students will examine the roles and functions of case managers including interviewing, assessment and record keeping in a variety of social service systems.
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Interview clients to assess strengths, weaknesses, and service needs
- Describe a presenting problem and develop a biopsychosocial assessment
- Develop a client-centered individualized service plan
- Refer clients to government and non-profit community resources
- Coordinate care among clients, families, and varied service providers, advocating on clients' behalf as needed
- Articulate appropriate methods of crisis-management
- Provide basic client education about available services and self-advocacy
- Document services provided
Students will gain knowledge and skills needed by entry-level social service professionals:
- Advocacy and self-advocacy
- Case management process
- Collaboration / teamwork
- Coordination of care
- Crisis management
- Public transportation
- Range of human service delivery systems and organizations
- Referral to community resources
- Service documentation / record keeping / progress notes

Evaluation and Grading
It is the instructor’s responsibility to provide timely feedback on assignments. It is the student’s responsibility to regularly check his/her grades in the course and discuss any discrepancies or concerns with the instructor. If you need to discuss grades, please make an appointment with the instructor.
Per Lake Washington Tech’s grading policy, any grade below a 2.0 is not considered passing. However, any grade 0.7 to 1.9 demonstrates that you completed the course and earned credit for doing so.
