Definitions

Lake Washington Institute of Technology identifies five CWLOs that all students graduating from LWTech should develop and demonstrate to be successfully prepared for today's careers and tomorrow's opportunities.

Communication

The ability to engage effectively in verbal, non-verbal, written, and/or symbolic expression.

Critical Thinking

The ability to evaluate information, draw inferences, arrive at conclusions, and create solutions based on objective analysis of the evidence.

Cultural Humility

The ability to practice lifelong learning and critical self-reflection in order to understand one’s own cultural identity and its impact on being open to and supporting the cultures of others. Cultural humility includes the following principles:

Lifelong learning and critical self-reflection (regarding knowledge of others’ beliefs and values and awareness of our own assumptions and prejudices)
Recognizing and challenging power imbalances (within partnerships, provider-client dynamics, physician-patient relationships, etc.)
Institutional accountability (including advocacy to improve access and opportunity for marginalized populations)

Information Literacy

The ability to recognize when information is needed, to choose the appropriate tools to locate the required information, and to effectively gather and evaluate the information.

Teamwork

The ability to participate actively and cooperatively in a group to advance a common goal.

General Information

Faculty members

determine where in their curricula the outcomes are naturally being taught;
create or refine current lessons, materials, and/or assignments to overtly teach to and embed the CWLOs; and
apply college developed student self-assessments and/or rubrics for assessment purposes.

Faculty submit reports to the Manager, Curriculum and Assessment on a bi-annual basis. The reports provide faculty with the opportunity to share their assignments, record student learning outcomes using the rubrics, and reflect on their own practice and identify improvements for the future. Students also have the opportunity to reflect on their own learning about the outcomes and how developing abilities in those areas impacts their personal and professional lives.
